Strengthening our communities and Ummah through the principles or Islam

As inheritors of sacred knowledge, Imams and Scholars of the English speaking nations from diverse theological and jurisprudential backgrounds have agreed to cooperate on mutual productive work. We live in a global village and Muslims from all over the world face similar challenges in their religion and life. Although the various scholarly councils and boards will have divergent methodologies in how they approach issues – pursuant to their local context, they are united in vision. It is with this vision of unity and collective work that a new vibrant and empathetic approach is needed. This new approach needs to be informed by the Islamic orthodoxy and traditional principles and values within the framework of Islam.

GLOBAL IMAMS AND SCHOLARS COUNCIL

Strengthening our communities and Ummah through the principles or Islam

Our primary purpose is to strive for the spiritual, social, ethical and intellectual betterment of the Ummah through humility, integrity, decency and service.  In our conduct with others, we seek to emulate the sublime character of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) anchored in a shared sense of humanity and universal values.

We benchmark ideas, thoughts, practices, and worldviews on Islam’s broad epistemological and ontological framework rooted in revelation and the Sunnah of the Prophet. We respectfully acknowledge the nuanced differences and views that enrich mainstream Islam’s legacy of thought and tradition.

We maintain that diversity of affiliation – whether to groups (Jama’ah), parties, institutions, cooperations or organisations – should never be a barrier to mutual support and collaboration towards the Muslim community and nation (Ummah).

Statement from the Global Imams and Scholars Council (GISC)The GISC Welcomes the Ceasefire in GazaThe Global Imams and Scholars Council (GISC) welcomes the ceasefire in Gaza and expresses deep gratitude for the tireless efforts that have brought an end to the atrocities inflicted on the Palestinian people. This ceasefire comes after 15 months of devastating attacks that claimed over 46,600 Palestinian lives, with women, children, and the elderly making up more than half of the identified victims. Over 109,660 individuals have been injured, and a study published in The Lancet suggests the true death toll may be 40% higher, nearing 64,260 lives lost. The scale of destruction in Gaza is catastrophic: over 50% of residential buildings, 67% of water and sanitation systems, and 92% of roads have been destroyed or severely damaged. More than 84% of healthcare facilities have been impacted, leaving over one million people homeless and critically worsening resource shortages. This harrowing destruction, among the deadliest in modern history, has been marked by genocide and injustice. The Israeli occupation, supported by certain Western and other allies, bears responsibility for these atrocities. Those complicit in these crimes must confront their role, take accountability, and contribute meaningfully to rebuilding Gaza, supporting the freedom of the Palestinian people, and acknowledging the decades of oppression and suffering. We extend heartfelt gratitude to the countless individuals from diverse communities, backgrounds, and faiths who have shown unwavering solidarity with Palestine. Now, more than ever, we must unite to rebuild Gaza, pursue justice, and hold the occupying state accountable for its actions. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this dark chapter of history becomes a turning point toward freedom, justice, and dignity for the Palestinian people.Global Imams and Scholars Council (GISC) See MoreSee Less

The Global Imams & Scholars Council (GISC) held its annual retreat this year in the Middle East, bringing together representatives from key imams and scholarly organisations in countries where Muslims are minorities. The retreat focused on strengthening collaboration and fostering bonds among these organisations to better serve their communities. Alhamdulillah, it was a highly productive gathering with meaningful discussions and plans for future initiatives. The first GISC retreat took place last year in Turkey, setting the foundation for these annual meetings. This year’s retreat was attended by representatives from: – The UK: British Board of Scholars and Imams (BBSI) – Australia: Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) – Canada: Canadian Council of Imams (CCI) – South Africa: United Ulamah Council of South Africa (UUCSA) – America: North American Imams Fellowship (NAIF) Two member organisations , the New Zealand Ulamah Council and the Japan Imams Council, were unable to attend but remain integral to the council. The GISC continues to play a vital role in uniting imams and scholars across the globe, providing a platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and mutual support to address the unique challenges faced by Muslim minority communities. GISC Deplores and Expresses Deep Concern over the Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony and Calls for Respect for Religion and Sacred ValuesThe Global Imams and Scholars Council (GISC) and its member organisations, representing Imams and Scholars councils from different countries and continents deplore and express deep concerns over the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics. The event displayed a glaring disrespect for religions and people of faith and a serious offence to the Prophets and religious symbols, particularly our Prophet Jesus (Peace be upon him) and his disciples. The actions observed during this ceremony signify an alarming moral decline and a blatant attack on religious values and human principles. They constitute a deep insult to the sentiments of all believers in God and His messengers, challenging their core convictions and beliefs. Furthermore, this offensive act violates the spirit of unity and understanding that sports, in particular the Olympics, are meant to promote. We note the concern about the increasing erosion of moral values in this day and age, where religious and ethical principles are being discarded and challenged. A sense of the sacred and inviolable is common to all humans. We all – every culture and group without exception – have that which we hold ‘sacred’: that which we cherish above all else and to which no dishonour can be tolerated. This may be, for example, a set of principles, a hallowed memory, or a symbol of identity. Each of these is held sacrosanct by that group, and their emotional connection to it is so strong that appeals to ‘freedom to insult it’ will pale into insignificance.Whether a symbol that represents all that one holds dear in terms of identity and belonging, or a figure who personifies everything that one cherishes about what it means to be truly human, a memory so profound (or traumatic) that it has shaped one’s sense of self and purpose, or a principle that stands as the marker between a society worth living in or one that must be changed. Each of these symbols strikes at the core of a person’s or group’s dignity, self-worth, moral foundations or sense of self. Though the devotion to this ideal may be inconceivable to others, it is necessary as part of a healthy and mutually respectful society that due heed is paid to what others truly value. It should also be noted that, whilst freedom of speech is a deeply cherished value in our society, we all understand the difference between preserving that right and making needless insults. The Global Imams and Scholars Council (GISC) and its member organisations strongly deplore these trends that promote insult and mockery of religious icons and figures rather than unity and understanding. We call upon all sports organisations and international bodies to uphold their responsibilities in respecting religions and sacred values and to avoid actions that could incite strife and tension among people. Sports should be a channel for communication and intercultural understanding, not a platform for insult and degradation. We also reaffirm the esteemed status of these figures of faith, particularly our Prophet Jesus (Peace be upon him), whom we honour as a great prophet and messenger of Islam. His divine mission called for the worship of God. Promoting these values fosters tolerance and mutual respect among peoples, highlighting the unity and noble goals of humanity and faith.Global Imams and Scholars Council (GISC)DOWNLOAD STATEMENT: gisc.global/GISC-Deplores-and-Expresses-Deep-Concern-over-the-Paris-2024-Olympics-Opening-Ceremony See MoreSee Less
